Castle Complex in Litomysl

Castle Complex in Litomysl

Castle Complex in Litomysl is representative seat of the Pernstejn family and one of the most beautiful examples of the Renaissance style in Pardubice region. All these qualities have led to the Castle Complex in Litomyšl being included on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1999.

What to expect?

There are two tours for the interior of the Litomysl Castle, during which you will see thirteen rooms in total, including the billiard room, the library, chapel and a rare baroque theatrette (small theater), which is noteworthy since it is one of only five working examples in the world. A huge crystal chandelier will also draw to your attention. It was created especially for Milos Forman’s film Amadeus, and later donated to the castle. Another highlight of the place is the intriguing exterior decoration. There are hundreds of square meters covered with sgraffito (a way of decorating a surface by scraping through a wet layer of plaster to expose a contrasting layer beneath).

Entrance fee

The admittance to the castle gardens is free. The entrance gate will lead you through an arched tunnel onto the gravel and pebbles in the main courtyard, where you will find the former brewery building, and family home of the famous Czech composer Bedrich Smetana. There is also small garden with statues, seats and some spectacular old trees. From this place you can enter the cellar gallery of Olbram Zoubek’s sculptures.

There is a wonderful French park surrounding Litomysl castle. In the Complex you will also find Baroque statues of Greek gods and the Empire style garden house with pictures of Egyptian landscapes. The park also includes an English garden in which the Smetana’s Litomysl music festival is held every year.
